Our Mission
The Family Shelter is dedicated to reducing the trauma of domestic violence by providing a safe haven for crime victims and their children. While the shelter is located in San Angelo, we serve the Concho Valley area of 15 Counties. We offer food, clothing, shelter and basic needs. Our Victim Advocates also offer counseling for adults and children, educational classes, community resources, case management and a children’s activity center for therapeutic and educational needs. We serve an average of 40-52 adults and children on a daily basis!

Group Collection Project
If you belong to a group or organization, have members collect items for the next meeting or as a special project. Organize a wish list theme, such as “paper & plastic good.” Make it fun! See our “Wish List”.
Community Education
Although one of our purposes and mission is community education, many times we just can’t do as much as we would like due to budgets and staffing. Possibly, you could volunteer time to take our materials to various service groups and organizations in the Concho Valley and talk about the mission, goals, and needs of the shelter, while gaining awareness for domestic violence issues in our community. You could contact your local library and ask to put up a display on domestic violence awareness, with information on resources that are available at the Family Shelter.
Work in the Child Activity Center!
If you love children, your assistance in the Children’s Activity Center would be greatly appreciated by both the shelter and the families. Offer some of your time to interact with the children at the shelter in a group at a certain day or time, or work with a single mom as she schedules meetings with lawyers, needs time for paperwork, housing appointments, and the list goes on. Sometimes they might not be able to take the children to their regular daycare due to a stalking partner so childcare while the mom works is also important. Leaving an old life and starting a new one can be time consuming and confusing and you could help ease that by assisting in the care of her children.
Bake Goodies
Bake cookies or goodies and take them to the shelter for the residents. Special treats such as this always puts a smile on a face!
Volunteer in the Outlying County Service Area
If you live in one of the surrounding counties of Tom Green, be a volunteer advocate for victims of domestic violence. Contact one of our County Outreach Advocates for more information. Sometimes it helps for a volunteer to meet the victim at the Sheriff’s Office for intervention or help the Advocate coordinate transportation to the Shelter in San Angelo.
Gifts for Residents
Purchase birthday and holiday gifts for the adults and children! A massage gift certificate, a restaurant gift card, a bath and body gift basket, or anything that embodies a relaxing time for them. Perhaps birthday party supplies–gift bags, wrapping paper, ribbon, balloons, etc.
Group Collections
If you belong to a group, pick one particular item and have members bring them to meetings or get-togethers all throughout the year. Make it fun! Choose a theme such as a “plastic & paper” drive. Or, canned goods! Check out our Wish List: http://familysheltersa.org/family-shelter/
Use Your Artistic Abilities
If you are artistic, offer to teach free lessons or host craft times at the shelter for the women or kids. This will help them take their mind of stressful situations and provide the children with some much needed entertainment. Or offer to help create and/or stock an art or craft area for the shelter by providing paper, paint, play dough, scrap fabric, glue, glitter, recycled materials such as glass jars and bottles, plastic tubs, newspaper, and more. Knit? Special Skill?
We always welcome volunteers.
